what do we really need for christmas?
These are the things that we really need..
We need holy time, a sense of life's deeper meaning, to devote time to pray together, mend ways and forgive and forget as God gave for us. We need space for seeing life as it is, for seeing the millions of people in the world who are starving to death because of extremely poverty and those victims of calamities and the millions who are dying of simple diseases. Ultimately, we need the CHRIST of CHRISTmas and renewal of our inner being. We need to hear and receive the message of Christmas, that God has entered the human arena to dwell with us, that His presence is consequently here and available to us now, that we are not alone, spinning out our destinies..., and that all our days are spent before God who poured all that He was and is and will be through His one and only Son. We need to surrender our lives to Christ, who is the real Gift of Christmas. What I mean is, I am talking about all of us. That is the way it ought to be for us at Christmas. Jesus Christ is our precious inheritance; our joy and peace.
My prayer is that in all the frenzy and noise of the season, may God help us to find our way home; and having found it, let us never lose it. Through Christ, who was born to show us the way. A blessed CHRISTmas day to all of you ;)

MARINDUQUE
Hi bloggers! After few days of spending in my province, I'm here again in manila. I spent 3 nights and 4 days there with my parents and my sis. I was so excited when we got there at 2 a.m in the morning, I just said to myself "I can't imagine, I'm here again after 2 years." I couldn't explain the happiness I felt. I spent my time in taking of photos of the beautiful spots there, visiting my relatives, walking and smelling the fresh air in the
seashore every morning, and exploring everything in that place. My cousin and I travelled around balanacan; we went to the peak of the church to see the whole spot; we sauntered to the sea if it is low tide; we went together to the market to buy fish, seafoods, vegetables, etc. People there are very hospitable, nice and approachable. I had seen some tourists there walking and taking photos. Here are some informations about our province, MARINDUQUE. It is an agricultural province, primarily growing rice and coconuts. It is also a place for handicrafts that is now being exported to dıfferent parts of the world. It is an island province of the Philippines located in the MIMAROPA region in Luzon. Its capital is Boac. Marinduque lies between Tayabas Bay to the north and Sibuyan Sea to the south. It is located south and west of Quezon, east of Mindoro, and north of Romblon. Marinduque is a heart-shaped island situated about eleven miles from the main island of Luzon. It is 370 square miles making it the thirteenth largest island in the Philippine archipelago. Marinduqueños are of Tagalog origin and speak Tagalog. However, because of the island's proximity to the Visayas region, the Marinduqueño variant of Tagalog has many words that are Visayan origin and are not comprehensible to other Tagalog speakers. Traces of Bicolano can also be found in this variant. Filipino and English are also well understood. Actually, 1 day is not enough to travel this place.
Their are many things to see and do on this relatively sleepy island, in the heart of the Philippines. Famed tourist destinations to see are the Bathala Caves (Santa Cruz), the Tawi-Tawi Falls (Santa Cruz), White Beach (Poctoy), Tres Reyes Marine Sanctuary (Tres Reyes Islands) and the Sulfar Spings, (Santa Cruz.). If you need directions or how to reach these destinations, asking the locals is the best thing to do. Generally, most marinduqueno’s know these destinations, and if they don’t, they will more than likely ask around to find out the information for you. If all else fails, the Jeepney drivers are best when it comes to these tourist destinations.
The Tres Reyes Marine Sanctuary is arguebly the best spot for diving, and one of the must-see places of Marinduque. The area is located at the south-western part of the island province, consisting of the three (3) islets of Gaspar, Melchor and Baltazar. Skin and scuba diving is the best outdoor activity on this sanctuary. In between the first islet of Gaspar and the mainland, a sunken Chinese commercial junk of the Sung and Chang Dynasty was discovered. Recovered by a joint team of National Museum and private foreign salvage group were numerous porcelain plates, jars, skillets and others. On the third islet of Baltazar, is an underwater cave on its eastern part 60 to 90 feet deep. Wall drift diving is at its best early in the morning where variety of coral and some pelagic fishes would be clearly visible.. Occasional schools of hammerhead sharks pass the western depths of the islets. An American built lighthouse still stands and still working on the center of the islet.

“TWILIGHT MANIA"
Good day! I wasn’t able to post here past few weeks ago because of my busy schedule in looking for the good companies that I will be having for my OJT. Anyway, back to my topic, a week before the showing of this movie, I was thinking that it’s a nice movie and very different from the other movies I watched before. My sister told me that this novel is #1 best selling book and 100 percent sure that this would be great movie ever. I asked her if she have a passes of this movie so, I can watch and find out if it’s true. This is it! Last day, I and my sis watched it. But before we went to the movie house, we checked first the schedule of the cinema movie. When we got there, I was the one to line-up to pay the green passes that my eldest sister gave to us :-) (I paid php 2.00 lang for the passes) We came in to the movie house at exactly 12:55 pm, we looked for the available seats but we couldn’t find for the 2 of us. We went first to the premiere but there’s still no available then we came back to deluxe and asked a help to the lady to see available seats. And finally, we got the right spot and the movie started ;) I don’t have any idea about Edward..all I know was he is one of the casts. I heard giggling and shrieking from girls around the cinema when there is a scene to this guy and his partner. I found out that this guy, Robert Pattinson who played the role of Edward Cullen, is so hot and handsome..hehe :) His dazzling eyes were striking me. The first scene was not lucid, what was so unique or special about the Cullens Clan? Then the last guy walks in, his name is Edward Cullen. Quite funny listening to all the girls screamed whenever Edward did anything provocative (like appearing for the first time). Actually, TWILIGHT is a 2008 romantic-fantasy film directed by Catherine Hardwicke and based on the novel of the same name by Stephenie Meyer. It is an action-packed, modern-day love story between a teenage girl and a vampire. Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) has always been a little bit different, never caring about fitting in with the trendy girls at her Phoenix high school. Then she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a boy unlike any she's ever met. Edward is a vampire, but he doesn't have fangs and his family is unique in that they choose not to drink human blood. Intelligent and witty, Edward sees straight into Bella's soul.
I searched in the net and I had read some comments about the movie, there are positive and a little bit negative. They much preferred to read the novel instead of watching. We watched it twice on the same day; we stayed there ‘till the next show played again. I am totally and utterly in love with this movie. All its details and heart-melting scenes were beautiful. The relationship between Edward and Bella was astonishing. One of the scene there in the cafeteria, I noticed the Philippine flag hanging on the wall with other different country flags. (Hmmnnn...Napansin ko lang naman) I was planning to buy and collect the 4 episodes of this novel book :-) If you haven't watch it, I am encouraging you guyz to watch this movie..no regrets, promise :)

SECRET OF LOOKING GOOD
'Never enough time!' 'Never enough money!' These are not valid excuses if you know the secret to creative dressing. The trick lies in starting small and building gradually on it. Your existing wardrobe probably holds the options you need for a refreshing new look. All you need is a little creative push for your imagination to run wild.
Here are some 'doable' fashion suggestions that don't cost you an arm and a leg, but will stand you in good stead in the coming year and beyond.
Accessorise
Remember, the more the merrier. So go out, girl, and befriend the roadside vendor at Colaba causeway/ Janpath or that little niche in your town to pick up little knick-knacks. Bring that junk jewellery out again. Beads and other matching jewellery, in same or contrasting colours, can add an intoxicating flavour to your attire.
Get coloured
So what if it is winter and you have to dress warm? You can wear colours that are brighter and warmer. Don't forget to add a dash of vibrant silver and gold as well. If you have stone-studded jewellery, nothing like it. Show it off!
Jazz it up
It is surprising what you can do with a measly little scarf. Use it as a wraparound with your denims, twist it around your hair or sling it around your neck. Get creative with that piece of delicate silk. Experiment with the colours of your scarf -- go vibrant.
Layer it
Ah! You've been meaning to try it. What better time than winter to wrap yourself up and look like a million bucks in the bargain. Here is a hint. Wear a string top with denims or a short skirt. Wear another top, say a tee-back this time, over it, in a contrasting colour. To look really interesting, you could wear a crop top, inside your blouse/ shirt/ top in a different base colour and let it show. The more the layers, the better.
The little black dress
Pull out that oft-used 'perfect black outfit'. It can come handy when you 'just don't know what to wear'. Do ensure you have classy silver, platinum or diamond jewellery to go with it. If you are thin, chunkier jewellery will look great on you. If you are bulky, go for delicate but visibly rich designs.
Simple but looks elegant
Wear a clothes which best and suits for you. Don't be too exaggerated because sometimes it leads to wrong "porma". If you want people to notice you make it simple yet elegant. For girls, if your outfit is sporty, don't put more accessories or it's better if no accessories. If party outfit, put some accessories that looks you fabulous and pretty, put a light make-up but it depends to your outfit and the event you are attending for. For boys, wear a nice outfits that makes you comfortable but make sure that you look groomy and it suits to you.
** Sometimes it doesn't matter what color, design, or style you are wearing, as long as you can carry it **

The Secret Reason A Man Will NEVER Tell You About Why He Didn’t Want YOU
Here it is:
When a man pulls away from a woman, it is NOT because men are “screwed up”…
And… it’s not because he has doubts about being in a relationship.
It’s because he has doubts about being in a serious relationship with THAT PARTICULAR WOMAN.
Something is missing with that woman that makes him think that she is NOT the one for him to settle down with… and that he can do better…
Here’s something else you should know…
When this happens, it’s usually NEVER over a “little thing”.
It’s also almost NEVER because a man isn’t attracted to you physically (if that was the case, he wouldn’t have gotten that close to you in the first place.)
It also doesn’t necessarily mean that he wasn’t at least somewhat attracted to you EMOTIONALLY…
What it DOES mean is that there wasn’t ENOUGH ATTRACTION there to lead him to feel that YOU were the one for him.
So was there anything you could have done about it?
The answer is YES.
And the good news is that it’s actually quite simple to give a man that powerful “gut feeling” that tells him YOU are the one…
It all comes down to understanding just a few important things about men…

ISN'T IT STRANGE?
Isn't it strange how 2 hours seem so long when you're at church, and how short they seem when you're watching a good movie?

Isn't it strange that you can't find a word to say when you're praying, but you have no trouble thinking what to talk about with a friend?

Isn't it strange how difficult and boring it is to read one chapter of the Bible, but how easy it is to read 100 pages of a popular novel or ZANE GREY book?
Isn't it strange how everyone wants front-row-tickets to concerts or games, but they do whatever is possible to sit at the last row in Church?
Isn't it strange how we need to know about an event for Church 2-3 weeks before the day so we can include it in our agenda, but we can adjust it for other events at the last minute?
Isn't it strange how difficult it is to learn a fact about God to share it with others, but how easy it is to learn, understand, extend and repeat gossip?

Isn't it strange how we believe everything that magazines and newspapers say, but we question the words in the Bible?

Isn't it strange how everyone wants a place in heaven, but they don't want to believe, do, or say anything to get there?

Isn't it strange how we send jokes in e-mails and they are forwarded right away, but when we are going to send messages about God, we think about it twice before we share it with others?
** See how it is strange. Other people wasting their time doing with nonsense things without even thinking about God's deed. They say there is God but what they didn't know is that what is God's plan for us. They don't want to give theirselves the chance to know more about God, that's why their are many people who didn't know where to go when they die. His plan for your life cannot be fulfilled by any other individual on this earth.

LEARN HOW TO KEEP A SECRET
Other seek to excuse themselves by asserting that they were not the first to discover these failings, but mentioned them only because they had heard of them from others. And yet they imagine there is no great harm in repeating what they have heard to those who were ignorant of it.
God forbids us to talk about the faults of others. Remember the Golden Rule: "Do not do to others what you would not like if it were done to yourself." In conclusion, we will listen to those who say: "You are quite right. I am aware that I ought not to talk about my neighbor's faults, I will never grow weary of renewing the resolution not to utter one simple uncharitable word about my neighbor. And if sometimes I speak unkindly, I ust not excuse myself by saying there is no great harm in it."
** The wise man will seek his own faults to ammend; The fool to his neighbor's alone will attend.**

THE ROLE OF YOUTH IN A HUNGRY WORLD
I am aware that the countries of the world are passing through a critical period of history. There is an uneasiness in this generation when old symbols and ways of life lose their meaning. New symbols and new ways of life must be developed to take the place of values that have become obsolete. We cannot deny that there is general disorientation in the new generation. There must be urgent solutions to the pressing problems of human destiny. The dramatic situation imposes on present and coming generations the duty of carrying out a struggle against universal hunge; that we can break the vicious circle of low productivity and help raise the economic patterns of areas that used to be unproductive.GENERAL ASSEMBLY & CONCERT

GLOBAL WARMING
The major natural greenhouse gases are water vapor, which causes about 36-70% of the greenhouse effect on Earth (not including clouds); carbon dioxide CO2, which causes 9-26%; methane, which causes 4-9%, and ozone, which causes 3-7%. It is not possible to state that a certain gas causes a certain percentage of the greenhouse effect, because the influences of the various gases are not additive. Other greenhouse gases include, but are not limited to, nitrous oxide, sulfur hexafluoride, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and chlorofluorocarbons.
Here is the video on how the Global Warming affects on Earth.
In my own opinion, if you are concern to our mother nature you should start it with yourself. What I mean is you must know the word “discipline” and apply it to yourself. If people have this word to theirselves there’s no doubt that they could influence others to have the unity and care to our nature. Are you willing to become one of the Green Consumers?? Here are some scene setting on Green Marketing and a potential solution to be part on the green side:
- Most people are quite “nice” and not antisocial or apathetic;
- Being green is not just for middle class, liberal, educated people – it’s everyone’s issue;
- The challenge is to make doing green stuff part of normal life;
- It’s not all up to governments, corporations and NGOs- we are all share the responsibility;
- Green marketing can be funky, edgy, intriguing, playful, impactful and creative;
- It doesn’t even have to look “green” (worthy, hippy, natural, etc.)
Potential solution to be part on the green side: creative way to engage people , greener lifestyle, and corporate responsibility with companies.

WHO AM I?
I came from a family of eight including my parents. I have five siblings and I’m the youngest. All girls and three of them were already
married; I have six nephews and one niece. I have a very supportive family who can lean on. I have beautiful relationship with them and we support each other. My parents don’t have work; my father retired in year 2000, he was a mechanic/driver; he was the only one worked so hard to support our needs while my mother stayed at home to look at us. My father strived so hard for us; he had to double his job then to provide everything for us. My father is a good provider, and so, my mother. Five of my siblings were finished in college. When my father retired from work, two of my sisters took the responsibility to support my college education. I really appreciate my family and I could not ask anything from them.Every time I’ll take a vacation in our province people would always keep telling me that I was a "miracle baby" but I would just ignore them because I’m tired of hearing that story; sometimes I pay them attention. Then, I began to become curious and ask my parents and my siblings about it. They told me when I was born, three days after, they found out that my umbilical cord was infected and the color of my skin became violet, so they had to rush me in the hospital. In short, I am 50-50 and everybody was panicking at the time because they did not even know if I would survive and live. They said my story and everything was clear to me. By the grace of God and with the help of the doctors, I am alive and kicking. God has given me another chance to live to fulfill my duty as a good daughter to my parents and to everyone. God has a beautiful plan for me, and it’s amazing that I am here today.
When I began to study I had experienced to have bullied in school. Some of my classmates threw me bad words that I could not understand. I hid all those things to myself and began to question why they should have done stupid thing to me while I’m good at them; same as when I was in my high school year and I could no
t evade them. I believe no one is exempted for that, everybody has experienced it. I had a low self-esteem, quiet, felt so alone. I don’t know how to socialize with others and I usually compared myself to others; I started to become envy especially on things that I don’t have, why they have this kind of things and like that… which was common to an ordinary girl like me. Others would tease me, especially the boys, and I began to hate them. I kept them all by myself; there were times I cried and ask God why they should have done this to me. I had many unforgettable experiences in my high school days but when I look at them now, I had also enjoyed and had fun.But when I started to meet friends, I became happy because I have somebody to lean on. I could not say to myself anymore “ na kawawa naman ako”. I’m thankful because all of my experience in life made me a better person and taught me that in this world I should be brave and know how to defend myself and appreciate those people come into my life. They are the catalysts in my life to become Who I Am. They can rub me the wrong way, but God taught me how to respond on them; it’s a reality of life and they are gifts from above. The results have often been chaotic and unsettling, but always life changing!
And now that I am in college, I am very delighted to meet new sets of friends; I started to fall in love deeply, hurt, and sacrifice. But I considered it as a lesson and another level of experiences again. I know that behind these sacrifices there will be a great reward. I don’t care what people say against me as long as I don’t hurt anybody. I could say that I can handle things now emotionally and mentally. Open for criticism, corrections, opinions, etc. I have to accept things because in this world no one is perfect. I have to be matured mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I just go with the flow and enjoy every single moment of my life. Life is beautiful!
“Life is too precious to worry about stupid things and it isn't like a train that when you miss it. You can say, "I'll catch the next one" Never waste the opportunity to live it and have fun 'coz this joyride passes just once.”

PINOYS AND PINAYS
ETO PA, 'Ang Pilipino NOON at NGAYON':
NOON: Wow ang sarap ng kamote (kahit nakaka-utot)
NOON: Wow ang sarap ng kapeng barako
NOON: Bili ka ng tela para magpatahi ng pantalon like maong
NOON: Sabon na Perla OK ng pampaligo
NOON: Pag naglaba ka batya at palopalo ok na,minsan banlaw lang sa batis pwede na
Mga Pilipino nga ba tayo? O baka sa salita lang at E-Mail pero wala naman sa gawa.
My Fellow Filipinos,
When I was small, the Philippine peso was P7 to the $dollar. The president was Diosdado Macapagal. Life was simple. Life was easy. My father was a farmer. My mother kept a small sari-sari store where our neighbors bought sang-perang asin, sang-perangbagoong, sang-perang suka, sang-perang toyo at pahinging isang butil na bawang. Our backyard had kamatis, kalabasa, talong, ampalaya, upo, batao, and okra. Our silong had chicken. We had a pig, dog & cat. And of course, we lived on the farm. During rainy season, my father caught frogs at night which my mother made into batute (stuffed frog), or just plain fried. During the day, he caught hito and dalag from hisrice paddies, which he would usually inihaw. During dry season, we relied on the chickens, vegetables, bangus, tuyo, and tinapa. Every now and then, there was pork and beef from the town market. Life was so peaceful, so quiet, no electricity, no TV. Just the radio for Tia Dely, Roman Rapido, Tawag ng Tanghalan and Tang-tarang- tang. And who can forget Leila Benitez on Darigold Jamboree? On weekends, I played with my neighbours (who were all my cousins). Tumbang-preso, taguan, piko, luksong lubid, patintero, at iba pa. I don't know about you, but I miss those days.
These days, we face the TV, Internet, e-mail, newspaper, magazine, grocery catalog, or drive around. The peso is a staggering and incredible P47 to the $dollar. Most people can't have fun anymore. Life has become a battle. We live to work. Work to live. Life is not easy. I was in Saudi Arabia in 1983. It was lonely, difficult, & scary. It didn't matter if you were a man or a woman. You were a target for rape. The salary was cheap & the vacation far between. If the boss didn't want you to go on holiday, you didn't. Theyhad your passport. Oh, and the agency charged you almost 4months of your salary (which, if you had to borrow on a '20% per month arrangement' meant your first year'spay was all gone before you even earned it). The Philippines used to be one of the most important countries in Asia . Before & during my college days, many students from neighboring Asian countries like Malaysia , Indonesia , Japan and China went to the Philippines to get their diplomas. Until 1972, The Peso had kept its value of P7 to the $dollar until I finished college. Today, the Philippines is famous as the 'housemaid' capital of the world. It ranks very high as the 'cheapest labor' capital ofthe world, too. We have maids in Hong Kong , laborers in Saudi Arabia , dancers in Japan ,migrants and TNTs in Australia and the US , and all sorts of other 'tricky' jobs in other parts of the globe. Quo Vadis, Pinoy? Is that a wonder or a worry? Are you proud to be a Filipino, or does it even matter anymore? When you see the Filipino flagand hear the Pambansang Awit, do you feel a sense of pride or a sense ofdefeat & uncertainty? If only things could change for the better...... . Hang on for this is a job for Superman. Or whom do you call? Ghostbusters. Joke. Right? This is one of our problems. We say 'I love the Philippines .. I am proud to be a Filipino. When I send you a joke, you send it to everyone in your address book even if it kills the Internet. But when I send you a note on how to save our country & ask you to forward it, what do you do?
You chuck it in the bin.
I want to help the maids in Hong Kong .. I want to help the laborers in Saudi Arabia .. I want to help the dancers in Japan .. I want to help the TNTs in America and Australia ..
I want to save the people of the Philippines .. But I cannot do it alone. I need your help and everyone else's.
So please forward this e-mail to your friends। If you say you love the Philippines , prove it. And if you don't agree with me, say something anyway. Indifference is a crime on its own.

THE HAPPENING (movie)
hi everyone! This could be my third time to post my blog here. Three days before it's showing, I had seen many times of this commercial and when I saw the trailer I said "wow..i think it's a good movie and exciting". They were all agreed nman basta daw free..hehe! and I said "ganon?! " They were asking me for a free passes and I said ok. And then, I called my sis to give me a passes and she said ok. I'm very delighted when i heard that and on the next day, i started reminding her about it because if i use this i would pay 2 pesos only! Yes, it's only 2 pesos for each passes, not too expensive, ryt? The night before it's show I asked my sis where the passes is and she said it's already sold out..I was very upset tlaga but I said to her that try to ask her officemates if they have an extra then inform me. cchhhaaarrraann! OMG! It was the day of the showing and i was kept on praying that i could watch the movie. My friends were txting and asking me if i already have a passes and i said i don't have pa.."Sayang nman", they said. It's so much obvious that they were so eager to watch especially me..hehe ;) The next two days, it was friday and my rest day..i decided to stay in the apartment nLang 'coz i have to clean and wash my clothes..hmn..that was my first time to clean the comfort room..haha!
And of course, after i did all of this, I was very very exhausted and sLeepy that's why i tried to sleep atleast an hour but the sound of my fone bothered me and when i opened my inbox it's my sis message informing me that she had a passes good for two only. Then, i started txting one of my friend (grace) that i had it already (i'm so happy ^_^ ) To make the story short, we decided to meet nLang near in the movie house and that's it! we me there and bought popcorn (cheese flavor) =) While we were watching this movie, i couldn't barely watch directly to the people killing theirselves and grace shouted everytime there is a shock scenes (me too...) hahaha! Talking about this movie, If you’re wondering if I’m going to give you a synopsis or talk in any detail about the mechanics of the storyline, forget it. Love it or hate it, I’ve decided I want to make viewers walk into this one as cold as possible. What I will say is that there is no giant twist this time out, no glorious The Sixth Sense bait and switch or insipid The Village final endgame that calls everything you’ve already seen back into question. The film is, by and large, as straight forward as anything the director has ever made, the information you’re given right at the start all you really need to take with you until the climactic end. This is suspense drama, shocking and an exciting movie. It's an entertaining movie, which is half the game, but it's not scary, which it should be. Neither it is something to be taken seriously, though it's intended to be. So guyz, try to watch this..i'm sure you will like it. ;)Thursday, June 19, 2008
INSPIRATIONAL STORY OF THE FATHER AND SON
Dick and Rick Hoyt are a father-and-son team from Massachusetts who together compete just about continuously in marathon races. And if they’re not in a marathon they are in a triathlon — that daunting, almost superhuman, combination of 26.2 miles of running, 112 miles of bicycling, and 2.4 miles of swimming. Together they have climbed mountains, and once trekked 3,735 miles across America. It’s a remarkable record of exertion — all the more so when you consider that Rick can't walk or talk. For the past twenty five years or more Dick, who is 65, has pushed and pulled his son across the country and over hundreds of finish lines. When Dick runs, Rick is in a wheelchair that Dick is pushing. When Dick cycles, Rick is in the seat-pod from his wheelchair, attached to the front of the bike. When Dick swims, Rick is in a small but heavy, firmly stabilized boat being pulled by Dick. At Rick’s birth in 1962 the umbilical cord coiled around his neck and cut off oxygen to his brain. Dick and his wife, Judy, were told that there would be no hope for their child’s development. "It’s been a story of exclusion ever since he was born," Dick told me. "When he was eight months old the doctors told us we should just put him away — he’d be a vegetable all his life, that sort of thing. Well those doctors are not alive any more, but I would like them to be able to see Rick now." The couple brought their son home determined to raise him as "normally" as possible. Within five years, Rick had two younger brothers, and the Hoyts were convinced Rick was just as intelligent as his siblings.
Dick remembers the struggle to get the local school authorities to agree: "Because he couldn’t talk they thought he wouldn’t be able to understand, but that wasn’t true." The dedicated parents taught Rick the alphabet. "We always wanted Rick included in everything," Dick said. "That’s why we wanted to get him into public school." A group of Tufts University engineers came to the rescue, once they had seen some clear, empirical evidence of Rick’s comprehension skills. "They told him a joke," said Dick. "Rick just cracked up. They knew then that he could communicate!" The engineers went on to build — using $5,000 the family managed to raise in 1972 - an interactive computer that would allow Rick to write out his thoughts using the slight head-movements that he could manage. Rick came to call it "my communicator." A cursor would move across a screen filled with rows of letters, and when the cursor highlighted a letter that Rick wanted, he would click a switch with the side of his head.In 1975, Rick was finally admitted into a public school. Two years later, he told his father he wanted to participate in a five-mile benefit run for a local lacrosse player who had been paralyzed in an accident. Dick, far from being a long-distance runner, agreed to push Rick in his wheelchair. They finished next to last, but they felt they had achieved a triumph. That night, Dick remembers, "Rick told us he just didn’t feel handicapped when we were competing." Rick’s realization turned into a whole new set of horizons that opened up for him and his family, as "Team Hoyt" began to compete in more and more events. Rick reflected on the transformation process for me, using his now-fam
iliar but ever-painstaking technique of picking out letters of the alphabet:" What I mean when I say I feel like I am not handicapped when competing is that I am just like the other athletes, and I think most of the athletes feel the same way. In the beginning nobody would come up to me. However, after a few races some athletes came around and they began to talk to me. During the early days one runner, Pete Wisnewski had a bet with me at every race on who would beat who. The loser had to hang the winner’s number in his bedroom until the next race. Now many athletes will come up to me before the race or triathlon to wish me luck."
It is hard to imagine now the resistance which the Hoyts encountered early on, but attitudes did begin to change when they entered the Boston Marathon in 1981, and finished in the top quarter of the field. Dick recalls the earlier, less tolerant days with more sadness than anger:
"Nobody wanted Rick in a road race. Everybody looked at us, nobody talked to us, nobody wanted to have anything to do with us. But you can’t really blame them - people often are not educated, and they’d never seen anyone like us. As time went on, though, they could see he was a person — he has a great sense of humor, for instance. That made a big difference."
After 4 years of marathons, Team Hoyt attempted their first triathlon — and for this Dick had to learn to swim. "I sank like a stone at first" Dick recalled with a laugh "and I hadn’t been on a bike since I was six years old." With a newly-built bike (adapted to carry Rick in front) and a boat tied to Dick’s waist as he swam, the Hoyts came in second-to-last in the competition held on Father’s Day 1985. "We chuckle to think about that as my Father’s Day present from Rick, " said Dick.
The Hoyts’ mutual inspiration for each other seems to embrace others too — many spectators and fellow-competitors have adopted Team Hoyt as a powerful example of determination. "It’s been funny," said Dick "Some people have turned out, some in good shape, some really out of shape, and they say ‘we want to thank you, because we’re here because of you’." Rick too has taken full note of their effect on fellow-competitors while racing:
"Whenever we are passed (usually on the bike) the athlete will say "Go for it!" or "Rick, help your Dad!" When we pass people (usually on the run) they’ll say "Go Team Hoyt!" or "If not for you, we would not be out here doing this." That is not to say that all obstacles are now overcome for the Hoyts. Dick is "still bothered," he says, by people who are discomforted because Rick cannot fully control his tongue while eating. "In restaurants - and it’s only older people mostly - they’ll see Rick’s food being pushed out of his mouth and they’ll leave, or change their table. But I have to say that kind of intolerance is gradually being defeated."Rick’s own accomplishments, quite apart from the duo’s continuing athletic success, have included his moving on from high school to Boston University, where he graduated in 1993 with a degree in special education. That was followed a few weeks later by another entry in the Boston Marathon. As he fondly pictured it: "On the day of the marathon from Hopkinton to Boston people all over the course were wishing me luck, and they had signs up which read `congratulations on your graduation!’" Rick now works at Boston College’s computer laboratory helping to develop a system codenamed "Eagle Eyes," through which mechanical aids (like for instance a powered wheelchair) could be controlled by a paralyzed person’s eye-movements, when linked-up to a computer.
